Placentia, CA- Helloooo, Placentia! It’s getting hot out there, which means summer will soon be upon us and so will Placentia Library’s popular annual reading program. The hard-working staff at the Placentia Library District is gearing up to make 2016’s Summer Reading Program the best ever! This year’s theme “Read – For the Win!” celebrates all the winners who read to learn and/or be entertained. Read books and attend programs to join in the fun! Whether you’re 9 months old or 90 years old, come into the Library to participate. We’ll find a book program for you with opportunities to win terrific prizes! New for this year, we have added an online component to the program through which registrants can keep track of their reading progress and goals anywhere they have Internet access!
Adults can participate by reading books to garner raffle opportunities to win fabulous prizes. This year, two lucky grand prize winners will each win a $250 Target gift card! New for this year: the first 100 adult registrants will receive a $5 Starbucks Gift Card. Adults can participate in the Read for the Win: “Weekly Challenge” for the opportunity to win a $50 Target gift card. Each Monday for 8 weeks, we’ll post a question on Facebook and Twitter. Who will have the correct answer sheet with all 8 correct answers after the eight weeks are up? Mark your calendar for Saturday, July 23rd at 1 p.m. to come to the Civic Plaza to enjoy the thundering drums of Kishin Daiko, a Japanese Taiko drum group. Maybe you’ll be one of the lucky adults chosen to try out a drum for yourself!
Teens: Think you can read 3 books over the summer? How about 9 books? Earn more raffle tix the more books you read towards awesome prizes! Cost=FREE! Enjoy doing cool stuff? Teens and tweens can participate in “Help PLD build its first ever DRONE!” program on July 26 at 6 p.m., “Make + Key = Makey Makey!” on August at 4 p.m., and “Coding: Creating a Story” on July 12 at 4 p.m. These programs are limited to the first 25 people so mark your calendar and don’t be late!
Children 0-12 years old have two options to join our summer reading program encouraging children to read books from our fantastic collection! Independent readers can visit the library, check out books, and win prizes for a total of 800 minutes of reading. Have little ones who can’t read yet? There’s a program just for them! Through the Read to Me program children win prizes when their parents read to them. Just keep track of the books you’ve checked out and read together then stop by the library to collect your prize. You and your children can also track your progress online. All those who complete the program will be eligible to participate in a free Grand Prize drawing. As an extra incentive, we will also have special weekly performances that children can attend and enjoy. Children are invited to attend these free programs each Wednesday at 2 p.m. Let’s stop the dread effects of the summer slide!
Finally, let’s not forget our biggest program of the year! The Summer Reading Celebration on August 20th at 10 a.m. will close out the 2016 Summer Reading Program.
